Many of my friends wonder why I decided to go to Chernobyl. The Book or HBO's mini-series was NOT the initiating factor. The initiating factor was the event itself as I lived it (in Greece) when it occurred. Of course, I couldn't go there 20 years ago, and to be honest, it was not much of an interest to me to see ruins, and especially this kind of ruins. So what was it then?
My curiosity and the main reason for wanting to go there is to see, first hand, how nature claims back what initially belongs to her and how it "consumes" human makings.
But everybody talks about radiation!!!
Indeed it is there!
4.26 μSv/h or 0,00426 mSv/H just a few hundred meters after our entrance into the 30km exclusion zone.
As a comparison, a single event like, i.e. a Dental X-Ray ranges from 1 to 30 μSv. As mentioned, a Dental X-Ray is a unique event while by being there, our body is continuously exposed to some levels of radiation sometimes (most of the times) higher than usual. Have in mind that this is ionizing radiation.
I will continue my posts on Chernobyl the following days when I return home as I still enjoy life in Kyiv. Stay tuned.
